Buster Boy, 03/20/97

My Buster Boy came to us 9 years ago. Buster was a stray basset hound who was hanging around the neighborhood for about a week. The day before we got him I was discussing with my husband (Barry) that we need to take him to the Humane Society.

Surprise, surprise, the next day my son Sean, 6 years old at the time came in the house and told us their is this dog down the street following him home. Well, their was no way I couldn't feed him. He was so thin and hungry, all he was getting down the street was cookies from the kids. So for the time being he was staying at our house until we decided what to do. Well I think you know what happened. Soon we were going on vacation so we needed to get Busters shots. Dr. Wilkinson checked out Buster and informed me he had Heartworms. He explained to me the treatment and the costs. I had decided that we'll go ahead. I had already fallen in love with Buster. I came home and told Barry about the Heartworms. He automatically said "" lets take him to the Humane Society . The children and I wanted to keep him. He did not realize that I had already got his preventative shots at the vets. After crying and begging we finally got our way. Years went by and Buster was in and out of the Dr. Office several times, seemed to get ill more than the average dog. Maybe that's why I was so close to him.

I found out that Buster has a blood cancer about 4 years ago . He had these little blood spots on his stomach. When ever they would show up we go and get them removed. In December of 96 Buster had a bad time. Didn't know what was wrong and Dr. Wilkinson took some x-rays and saw that Busters spleen was the size of a grapefruit. The cancer was their. He was operated on the next day. He was visited by me every day after work and he also had Kelly my daughter visit him every day because she works at the animal hospital. After a week at the hospital Buster came home. I was with the understanding that he was on borrowed time.

Buster had his up and downs, on March 17th he wasn't doing well, not doing good for about a week, wasn't eating good and just not up to par. Well, off to the hospital we go. Dr. said we'll try steroids and see what happens. Buster had to stay so he could do some blood work so he told Phillip ( the Vet Tech) to go but Buster in his hotel room and I could pick him up at lunch. You see Buster had his own cage in the operating room. Picked Buster up and came home , his kidneys and lungs and blood count were good but he did have something in his stomach. I like always prayed that these magic pills would make him better but they didn't. By Wednesday I knew it was time. This was the hardest decision I had ever made. Dr. Wilkinson and Phillip came to the house on Thursday and Buster passed away.

I loved my Buster Boy and will always remember the good times we had together. Their is a special place in my heart for him that will always be their.

Love you, Mom
